JW Turner in Gravesend

JW Turner in Gravesend

Gravesham Arts are proud to be supporting Linda Davies – a local artist studying Fine Art at Gloucester University.

Her work is based on research she has made about the Thames in Gravesend and the surrounding landscape.

For her final piece, she is painting with mud that she dug from the foreshore at Bawley Bay. Linda has noticed that the foundations of St Andrews Mission House, are the same as in the building painted by J.W. Turner. The original building was a public house, The Spread Eagle, which it may have been when Turner did this painting in 1796, the Mission House was built around 1860.

Turner must have been painting this in Bawley Bay, as this is where the small boats landed at the time.

We will keep you informed of Linda’s work and when she will be exhibiting at St. Andrew’s Arts Centre. Watch this space!
