The Elephant Man

The Elephant Man by Bernard Pomerance

No Frills Theatre Company are a multi award winning community based group, founded in 2013.Our highly praised productions have included Glengarry Glen Ross,Of Mice and Men,Orphans and Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me. This year we made our debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival,to great critical success with a production entitled American Justice. The company regularly performs in numerous venues in Gravesend. Our next production is going to be The Elephant Man by Bernard Pomerance,a dramatisation of the life of John Merrick, better known as the titular Elephant Man,due to his debilitating bodily deformities.A man born into poverty in the Victorian era, abused and manipulated by unscrupulous people,he found himself as a circus side show freak. Fortunately he was saved from a life of drudgery by a caring member of a gawping audience,a doctor from The London Hospital. He was taken into the care of the hospital, where he enjoyed a comfortable but limiting existence.

John subsequently became a celebrity within his own right, becoming the toast of London society and visited by the likes of royalty. A moving and thought provoking play which doesnt shy away from portraying the grim life led by someone seen as an ‘outsider’,through no fault of their own,as resonant today as it was over 100 years ago. The play itself has been performed globally, most recently in the West End and Broadway starring Bradley Cooper, other productions having starred the likes of David Bowie and Mark Hamill. The story is probably best known tbrough the film adaptation starring John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins.
Our production will be performed over 4 days at the St Andrews Arts Centre, Royal Pier Road, Gravesend DA12 2BD from the 24th to 26th October at 8pm and the 27th October at 1pm and 4pm. Tickets are available via the companies website on or by calling the box office on 07904 963585 and cost £10.00.
